Taking its inspiration from classic platformers such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Polyroll a retro platform game developed by Spicy Gyro Games and Shiny Dolphin Games LLC is now available to buy for the Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam or Itch.io.
Polyroll is the eponymous tale of Polyroll, a poly poly with attitude. When all his friends are kidnapped by the evil Kaiser Kiwi it’s up to Polyroll to use his super-shell to bounce, spin and ricochet his little socks off to save his friends. Eleven crazy bosses stand in his way, including a crazed stoplight, haywire appliances, and a giant spider stuck in a computer case.
It’s a bright and colourful game, with a strong Sonic the Hedgehog influence, with loads of hidden paths and 96 hidden gems for you to collect.
It’s been a long journey to get Polyroll released. It was initially conceived in 2010, and released on iOS a couple of years later.
“When we first released Polyroll on iOS in 2012, it had been a really long time since a 2D Sonic-inspired game had been released,” says developer Justin Craig.
“Everyone always associates Sonic games with speed, but I thought there was more to explore with the ball mechanic,” explains Craig, a long-time fan of classic platformers. “It completely changes how you think about movement when you can ricochet off of any wall in the level, not just bumpers and springs.”
Polyroll has now been completely remastered including brand new pixel art, five more levels, more collectibles and a new boss to defeat, as well as some playability tweaks and updated controls.
