Every once in a while, I will scroll down my Twitter feed to see the wondrous sea of game developers tweeting about their games. And on a few occasions, I will see a game that will pique my interest. In this case, it was Lona Realm of Colors. My first encounter with it was when I saw they were looking for backers on Kickstarter. Of course, I immediately jumped in to see what this game had to offer. And I was not disappointed. From the intriguing gameplay to the beautiful artwork, I was really surprised by how great this game looked. And now, they have reached their goal (and then some!). So, I wanted to talk you through what you can expect from Lona; to be released some point next year.

The Story

Lona Realm of Colors tells the story of a girl called Lona. In an attempt to deal with issues in her life, she decides to turn to art. Creating art as an escape. Unfortunately, she soon finds herself trapped by the thing she previously saw as a relief. Now, she must find her way out of her chaotic world she has created using the help from her friends Mrs Shmidt, the cat and Mr Ruppel the crow. Each show a different side to Lona’s art: one chaotic and fun the other, cold and logical. I really like the concept behind this. I’m sure there must be creatives out there who feel the same way as Lona, sometimes being trapped by the thing you love most. I have never seen such an interesting concept for a game that incorporates art and story all bundled together as one.

This is a point-and-click adventure game, with strong emphasis on the adventure. The developers Space Fox, didn’t want to make the game all about fetch puzzles and dialogue. It’s more about the story telling and the adventure that Lona has along the way. You have to work your way out of each level by utilising the two “worlds” of art. The chaotic, fun side and the cold, logical side. You take items from each world and use them to figure out how to escape. It’s simple but I think it would really work in this environment. Since the main focus isn’t about trying to make the game super challenging. However, one issue I can see arising is that the puzzles become  rather repetitive. If it does become more difficult but the pay-off is done well then it could work. We will have to wait and see.

Dark and Light – Concept Art

I would have to say of all things that interested me about Lona Realm of Colors, the art style was the biggest influence. From the moment I saw the first art piece, I was instantly enticed. The art style is so beautiful and from the look of the early screenshots, wonderfully integrated into the world. I am so excited to play around in a world that is not only visually stunning but also encapsulates the artist’s mind. Both tragic and majestic. I am so blown away by this art style and I know a lot of you will be too.

If you want to check out what Lona Realm of Colors is (hopefully) going to look like you can check out their Kickstarter page for more info. Also, don’t forget you can also follow them on Twitter for all the latest updates on how the game is coming along.

Lona Realm of Colors is set to hit PC and Mobile at some point in 2018. Stay tuned!
